The fighter I-153 was designed on N.N.Polikarpovs initiative in the autumn of 1937. It came as the further development of the fighter I-15. The main difference consisted in the retractable landing gear. By the beginning of the war, together with the I-16 it made up the basis of the Soviet fighters. It was used during the Great Patriotic War till 1943, mainly as a low-flying attack aircraft. Making a part of the air forces of the Northern Fleet, the several I-153 were used till the end of the war for the protection of the inner marine convoys in the White Sea. Till nowadays the only one sample of I-153 of the pre-war construction has remained, being exhibited in the Museum of Aviation in Le Burge (France).
