"Koreyets" is the Russian seagoing gunboat with heavy artillery intended for the protection of coastal waters. It was founded in Stockholm in 1886, set afloat in August 7, 1886, went into service in 1888. In total on this project 9 ships were constructed. The "Koreyets" was in service in the Far East. Before the beginning of the Russian-Japan War 1904-1905, together with the armored cruiser of the 1-st rank "Variag" (commander-the captain 1-st rank V.F. Rudnev) it was stationary in the Korean port Chemulpo. In February 9 (January 27) 1904 the "Variag" and the "Koreyets" made the breakthrough and at 11:45 joined the unequal battle with the Japanese squadron. The battle lasted for 1 hour. The "Koreyets" participated only in its final phase, covering the retirement of the "Variag". It managed to repulse the torpedo attack, undertaken by the Japanese destroyers. During the battle the ship fired 52 shells against the enemy. The "Koreyets" had no losses or damages. In order to prevent the capture of the ship by the Japans, after the battle (at 15:55) the "Koreyets" was blown up in the roads of Chemulpo. The crew was accepted on the board of the French cruiser "Pascal", removed to Saigon and soon it returned to Russia. In St. Petersburg all the officers were rewarded with the order of St. George of the 4-th grade, and the members of the crews - with the distinctions of this order. In honor of the heroic deed of the soldiers the special medal "For the battle of the "Variag" and "Koreyets" by Chemulpo" was instituted, which was received by each participant of the battle.
