| The prototype of the battleship "Navarin" is the English battleship "Trafalgar". It was put into service in July 1, 1895. The Russian ship had the similar armoring system: the partial strake with the length in the center of 406 mm, the traverses and the massive citadel. The horizontal defense was peculiarly strong: to the hull deck the two flat armoring decks of the citadel with the total thickness of 114 mm were added. In spite of the absence of armour in the ends, by the moment of its going into service the ship was considered almost invulnerable to artillery. The total weight of its armour made up 3400 ton (34% displacement). It had the most powerful armoring among all Russian battleships. In October 2, 1904 it went out from Libava as a part of the 5-th detachment of the Second squadron of the Pacific Ocean. In May 14, 1905 it got 6 hits with the 8- and 12-inch shells. In this battle the captain 1-st class, Baron B.A. Fitingoff was fatally wounded, 17 people were killed or wounded.
In the night the "Navarin" was torpedoed in the stern from the starboard side, and then also in the middle of the starboard side and in the bow port side. It turned over and sank with 700 people crew. 3 men were saved. According to the other data, after the hit of the first torpedo it was blown up on 1 or 2 mines, put on its course by the Japanese destroyers.
